From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27 member states which are located primarily in Europe. Committed to regional integration, the EU was established by the Treaty of Maastricht in 1993 upon the foundations of the European Communities. With over 500 million citizens, the EU combined generated an estimated 28% share (US$ 16.5 trillion) of the nominal and about 21% (US$14.8 trillion) of the PPP gross world product in 2009. The EU has developed a single market through a standardised system of laws which apply in all member states, and ensures the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, including the abolition of passport controls by the Schengen Agreement between 22 EU states. It maintains common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries and regional development. Sixteen member states have adopted a common currency, the euro, constituting the eurozone. As a legal personality the EU is able to conclude treaties with countries and enacts legislation in justice and home affairs. It has devised the Common Foreign and Security Policy, thus developing a limited role in European defence and foreign policy. Permanent diplomatic missions of the EU are established around the world and representation at the WTO, G8, G-20 and the United Nations is maintained. As an international organisation, the EU operates through a hybrid system of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism. In certain areas, decisions are taken by independent supranational institutions, while in others, they are made through negotiation between member states. Important institutions of the EU include the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Central Bank. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens . The EU traces its origins from the European Coal and Steel Community formed among six countries in 1951 and the Treaty of Rome formed in 1957 by the same states. Since then, it has grown in size through enlargement, and in power through the addition of policy areas to its remit. The last amendment to the constitutional basis of the EU came into force in 2009 and was the Lisbon Treaty, by virtue of which the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union was elevated to legally binding status. The Commission is led by a President, nominated by the European Council and agreed by the European Parliament. The other 26 Commissioners are nominated by the EU member-states. I ask this strictly from an investment/capitalist standpoint. If you could go back in a time machine to a pre European Union, what what would you have invested in, or withdrawn from? Please no political bloviating, and please speak in terms of a private investor, not large imperial motives. Asked by stratmagic - Sat Dec 29 02:54:09 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would have invested capital in banks and insurance companies. actually i would have "purchased" some shares too. they are safe and if i had the legal age (i'm 14) i would have done so. at least in malta, banks and insurance companies seem very prosperous Answered by Dale S - Sat Dec 29 03:00:44 2007 Can students from European Union take loans in other EU countries?
Q. Can students from European Union take loans in Sweden, Holland, Germany and Spain (when they get into the higher education in these countries) ? Asked by Marija D - Fri Mar 6 12:05:18 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. IN the Netherlands it used to be that (as a Dutch student) you could not obtain a student loan (from NL) and study abroad, but this has now changed Concerning EU students studying in the Netherlands, it is possible to apply for a student loan there but this is on condition that you pay the tuition fees and receive no income (within NL). You can read more on one of the Uni sites here linking to the body which handles student loans (IB Group) Answered by bl bl - Fri Mar 6 14:27:10 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "european union" "If you cannot join them, beat them!"
"We do not fear that the operations of time may never bring a united Europe, with a reunited Germany at its centre. We do not know how it will happen, how this unnaturally divided Germany is to become once again. It is obscure to us, and we must take refuge in the belief that history will find ways and means of overcoming the unnatural and restoring the natural: a Germany as a consciously serving member of a Europe united in self-awareness – not as its lord and master... Let us not delude ourselves over the fact that among the difficulties delaying the unification of Europe is a mistrust of the purity of German intentions, a fear by other peoples of Germany and of hegemonic plans that its vital energy may install into it, which in their view it does not conceal very well….It is for the rising German generation, for German youth, to dispel the mistrust, this fear, by rejecting what has long been rejected and clearly and unanimously announcing their desire: not for a German Europe, but for a European Germany."
"We are a very special construction unique in the history of mankind ... Sometimes I like to compare the EU as a creation to the organisation of empire. We have the dimension of empire .. What we have is the first non-imperial empire .. We have 27 countries that fully decided to work together and to pool their sovereignty. I believe it is a great construction and we should be proud of it"
